About AfriChild

A Centre of Excellence in the Study of the African Child

The AfriChild Centre is a multi-disciplinary research institution dedicated to improving the lives of children across Africa. Established in 2013, the Centre focuses on generating high-quality research to inform policy and practice related to child welfare, protection, education, and health.

Operating from Kampala, Uganda, AfriChild works at the intersection of research, policy, and practice. Our team of experienced researchers, programme officers, and child welfare specialists collaborate with government ministries, international organisations, and academic institutions to translate evidence into action.

The Centre's work spans six thematic areas — Care & Protection, Education & Development, Participation, Policy & Regulations, Survival & Health, and Systems Strengthening — reflecting a comprehensive vision for child well-being across the continent.

Our Journey

Twelve Years of Impact

From a bold idea in Kampala to an internationally recognised research institution.

Foundation
AfriChild Centre is Founded
The Centre is established in Kampala, Uganda as a multi-disciplinary research institution with a singular focus: improving the well-being of Africa's children through evidence. A founding team of child welfare researchers and practitioners launches the organisation with seed support from ChildFund International and Makerere University.
2013
2015
Partnership
UNICEF Uganda Collaboration Launched
AfriChild partners with UNICEF Uganda to begin its first major multi-year child welfare research programme, focusing on early childhood development services in northern Uganda. This partnership establishes AfriChild's credibility as a serious research partner for international organisations.
Knowledge
Knowledge Hub Established
AfriChild launches its digital Knowledge Hub at hub.africhild.cloud — a free, open-access repository of child welfare research organised across six thematic areas. Within its first year, the hub hosts over 40 publications accessed by researchers and policymakers across 20 countries.
2016
2018
Programme
PPURE Programme Initiated
The Policy and Practice Use of Research in East Africa (PPURE) programme is launched, training policymakers and practitioners across Uganda in evidence-based decision-making for child welfare. PPURE becomes one of AfriChild's flagship capacity-building initiatives, eventually reaching over 300 practitioners.
Research
Kulea Watoto — ECD Research Partnership
AfriChild is named the research and learning partner for the Kulea Watoto consortium — a five-organisation partnership focused on improving early childhood development outcomes for children aged 0–8 in Uganda. This becomes AfriChild's largest and most impactful research engagement to date.
2019
2021
Expansion
Inter-University Programme Launched
In collaboration with Makerere University and four other Ugandan universities, AfriChild launches the Inter-University Programme — a landmark initiative to build the next generation of child welfare researchers across the country and strengthen child-focused research capacity in higher education institutions.
Evaluation
STRYIDE Evaluation — UNICEF & UNCDF
AfriChild is commissioned by UNICEF Uganda and UNCDF to lead the independent evaluation of the STRYIDE youth economic empowerment programme. The evaluation provides critical evidence on what works for adolescent economic inclusion in Uganda, informing the programme's scale-up strategy.
2022
2024
Milestone
120+ Publications & 50,000 Children Reached
AfriChild crosses two landmark milestones: over 120 research publications, policy briefs, and reports in the Knowledge Hub; and evidence of direct programme impact on more than 50,000 children across Uganda, Rwanda, and East Africa. The Centre is now recognised as one of the leading child welfare research institutions on the continent.
